The City

The City

Welcome to Providence, Rhode Island.

Founded in 1636 by English Protestant theologian Roger Williams, Providence was the answer to Williams's exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. He named his new settlement after 'God's merciful Providence'. After purchasing the land from local Narragansett tribes, he and his followers quickly started practice and preach their credences. Williams believed in subversive ideologies such as religious freedom, separation of church and state, and fair transactions with local Native American tribes.

He declared the settlement open to all religious dissenters and outcasts seeking political refuge. Williams began his dream of creating a model community for different peoples. Since its inception, Providence has remained as a unique community of diverse individuals seeking their own freedoms and convictions.
